Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Now people are watching Inglourious Basterds, which is a very latest popular movie, more and more people are talking about it, so I think I’d better share it with you guys. Well, let’s find out what’s interesting in this film.

According to Wikipedia:

Inglourious Basterds is a 2009 revenge war film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and released in August 2009 by The Weinstein Company and Universal Pictures. It was filmed in several locations, among them Germany and France, beginning in October 2008. The title of the film was inspired by Italian director Enzo Castellari’s 1978 film The Inglorious Bastards. However, it is not a remake. Instead, it is set in Nazi-occupied France during World War II, and depicts a plan to assassinate the Nazi leadership.

Tarantino has repeatedly stressed that despite its being a war film, Inglourious Basterds is his “spaghetti western but with World War II iconography”. In addition to spaghetti westerns, the film also pays homage to the World War II “macaroni combat” sub-genre (itself heavily influenced by spaghetti-westerns), as well as French New Wave cinema.

Inglourious Basterds was accepted into the main selection at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in competition for the prestigious Palme d’Or and had its world premiere there in May. It was the only U.S. film to win an award at Cannes that year, earning a Best Actor award for Christoph Waltz.

The story of this movie is very meaningful and interesting, let’s take look.

The Story:

In the first year of the German occupation of France, Shosanna Dreyfus witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa. Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine organizes a group of Jewish American soldiers to perform swift, shocking acts of retribution. Later known to their enemy as “the basterds,” Raine’s squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget von Hammersmark on a mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquis, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own.

Brad Pitt … Lt. Aldo Raine
Mélanie Laurent … Shosanna Dreyfus
Christoph Waltz … Col. Hans Landa
Eli Roth … Sgt. Donny Donowit
Michael Fassbender … Lt. Archie Hicox

Now let’s take a look at what critics said about this movie.

Critics Reviews:

A sprawling feast of a movie that’s by turns funny, exciting, outrageous and just plain exhilarating, Inglourious Basterds actually is the event it was touted to be.

It’s a violent wish-fulfillment fantasy, and if such a thing is necessarily immoral, then Inglourious Basterds is immoral. But it’s also — necessarily — a provocation.

Tension, twists, humor, and it’s constant. This is the best adult ‘Once Upon a Time’ I can think of.
