My One and Only

Now what people are watching is My One and Only, which is a latest film loved by many people. So let’s discuss it today.

According to Wikipedia:

My One and Only is a 2009 comedy feature film loosely based on a story about George Hamilton’s early life on the road with his mother and brother, with anecdotes that Hamilton had told to Merv Griffin. Griffin pitched the idea for the script, and had shepherded the project from idea to production, until his 2007 death. His company serves as one of the film’s producers.

My One and Only is directed by Richard Loncraine, written by Charlie Peters and stars Renée Zellweger as Hamilton’s mother.

The film was released on August 21, 2009, in New York City, New York, and Los Angeles, California. On September 4, 2009 the release was expanded to 20 markets across the US. The film was also released in the Netherlands on August 20, 2009.

Film Cast:

  • Renée Zellweger as Anne Deveraux (based on Anne Hamilton Spalding), a glamorous dreamer searching for a wealthy man
  • Logan Lerman as 15-year-old George Hamilton
  • Mark Rendall as George’s older half-brother, Robbie
  • Chris Noth as Harlan, a retired military officer and potential husband for Anne[1]
  • Nick Stahl as Bud, a young mechanic and admirer of Anne

The Story:

In the U.S. in 1953, the glamorous Anne Deveraux (Renee Zellweger) lives with her bandleader husband Danny, their 15-year-old son George, and Danny’s somewhat older effeminate son Robbie. After catching Danny in an affair Anne sends out George to buy a car, leaves Danny, and embarks with Robbie and George on a journey through the U.S., in search of a husband to fund a new life for her and her boys. Several rich men become a disappointment for Anne, including one she marries, but who turns out to be married already. Anne is briefly put in jail after starting a chat in a bar with a man who turns out to be an undercover police officer, and who takes her for a prostitute and charges her with solicitation…

The New York Times introduced the My One and Only movie like this:

In “My One and Only,” a good-natured screwball road film set in 1953, Renée Zellweger plays Ann Devereaux, a fading Southern belle who drags along her two teenage boys on a nationwide husband-hunting expedition. Crinkling her eyes, smiling coyly and perambulating with seductive flounces, Ann could be a cousin of Blanche DuBois. She belongs to a breed of aggressively glamorous women whose syrupy wiles modern feminism has rendered quaint, and Ms. Zellweger inhabits her fully.

The film’s dialogue is nitwitty at best. Zellweger, who’s established herself as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars,by taking on this role, lowers her prestige to that of a dachshund’s belly. The entire film moves at a snail’s pace so when we add up all the negatives about it and how much I deplored it, it will probably win 5 Oscars come Feb.2010. [IMDb]

Now let’s take a look at what critics said about this film.

Critic Reviews:

USA Today, Claudia Puig
“There’s nothing particularly unique about My One and Only, except that the story is inspired by incidents in the real childhood of actor George Hamilton.”

If you have any curiosity at all about how a fellow like George Hamilton became a fellow like George Hamilton, My One and Only answers the question by looking, fondly, at his primary caregiver.

A sweet, sentimental, occasionally naughty, attractively mounted piece of old-fashioned hokum that will appeal to audiences, mostly female, of a certain age.
